Here is a list that summarizes the main steps in creating a web site:

SERVICE TYPE DESCRIPTION

Determine goals for the site

Goals must be set for the finished site to achieve. Businesses often want to increase customer retention, attract new ones, and generate revenue. A musical group needs the site to keep fans excited and to get new ones.

Develop site infrastructure, page map

Look at a total overview of the information available or needed for the site to fulfill it’s goals, and make a list of the sections and pages that will split that information up logically. Diagram how to connect sections and pages with an efficient navigational structure. If a site is not well organized it will frustrate visitors, resulting in fewer return visits.

Page shell design

Once the page map is complete, the basic look of the pages is graphically designed. This is called the “shell” and refers to the elements that appear on most or all of the pages, such as page headers, navigation buttons, type styles, etc.

Content creation

Content refers to elements that are unique to individual pages. Text must be written and/or edited. Line art graphics such as logos must be provided or created. Photos must be provided or taken, then digitized.

Photo and graphic preparation

Photos and graphics must be prepared with precision in order to get the best balance of image quality and small file size for fast download time. Rampant Multimedia are experts in photo color correction and can make your most troublesome photos look their very best.

HTML authoring

HTML authoring means writing the code that provides browsers with the framework that organizes items on web pages. High quality coding provides pages that display quickly and correctly on most visitor’s browsers, whether they have Internet Explorer or Netscape, and even if they don’t have the newest version.

Table vs. CSS based page layout

Web pages have for the most part been constructed using tables to organize the content visually. Web developers have recently begun to use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to organize content. We can use either method as specified by the client.

JavaScript authoring

JavaScript is another code language. It doesn’t replace HTML, but works along with it to create special effects such as rollovers (buttons that change when the mouse rolls over them) or to add functionality to pages. As with HTML, high quality JavaScript code will function correctly on most if not all browsers.

Animated GIF graphics

This graphic format provides images that employ simple but effective animations. Banner ads are one example, where every few seconds an ad is replaced by another one in the same page position. Rampant Multimedia are experts with this format and offer animated GIF creation as a separate or included service.

Back end development

Back end refers to scripts, databases and applications that run on a web server to extend the functionality of the site. If you need to be able to make daily updates to a news section of the site, or if there is a store on the site that sells products online, then back end development is required. Rampant Multimedia works with affiliates for back-end work on our projects, and can match up with any of the standard languages, such as ASP, PHP and Cold Fusion.

Web hosting

A web site cannot be seen by the public unless it is present on a server that is connected to the internet. A web host is a company that rents server space for sites, and makes sure that the server is working 24/7. Rampant Multimedia works with a number of web hosts that we recommend to clients based on their needs.

Domain name registration

Web sites must have a registered domain name to be available on the internet. The domain name is what visitors type into the address bar of their browser to go to your site. We can help you with this step if you so require.

Search engine registration

For people to look for a web site using search engines such as Excite or Google, that site must be be registered with the search engine company. Most search engines used to take registrations for free, but some now charge fees to register with them. Some like Yahoo offer free registration for non-profit sites, but require a fee from commercial sites.
